Coleman was born and raised in the town of the town of Blackpool in Lancashire. She attended Arnold School Blackpool, where she was able to get straight As in the A-levels she took. In discussing her Emmerdale character Coleman expressed regret over not attending a university. Coleman when she was still at the high school system, was a student of a theatrical company called In Yer Space. They presented the show Crystal Clear for the Edinburgh Festival. Along with receiving a prize for her acting, the play it performed attracted a lot of attention. Coleman was chosen for the Emmerdale character Jasmine Thomas after auditioning with drama schools. Coleman got two nominations in the year 2007. She was nominated for two awards. British Soap Awards nominated her as the best newcomer. In the National Television Awards, she was also nominated best newcomer with the highest popularity. In 2009, she received nominated in the two categories including Best Actress-Sexiest Female as well as Best Dramatic Performance. Coleman got a nomination in the category of Best Actress from the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on March 21st, 2012 that Coleman was set to portray Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion following the departure of Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters left the show. Moffat chose her due to the ease with which she worked together with Smith as well as the fact that she was faster at speaking than Smith.
